{"id":17961,"date":"2023-05-25T17:25:23","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T17:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artjournal.collegeart.org\/?page_id=17961"},"modified":"2023-05-31T13:02:18","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T13:02:18","slug":"collaborations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/artjournal.collegeart.org\/?page_id=17961","title":{"rendered":"Collaborations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maria Elena Gonzalez\u2019s <em>Skowhegan Birch #1, #2<\/em>, and <em>#3<\/em> sculptures, inspired by the markings of birch trees, were musical artworks begging to be activated. As a visual artist interested in experimental sound and composition, Gonz\u00e1lez sought the expertise of trained composers and musicians to help bring her works to life. Her <em>Tree Talk<\/em> exhibition at the Mills College Art Museum (2019) offered the perfect opportunity. Widely known for its experimental music program with trailblazing faculty and alumni, including John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, Guillermo Galindo, and others, Gonz\u00e1lez identified and secured collaborations with two composers in the graduate music program, John Ivers and Marc Zollinger.
